Wine 1.7.1 makes pretty much everything Just Work.
Many years ago, Runic Games came out with an action-roguelike game calledTorchlight, which was fairly well-received. I didn’t encounter it untila few years later when it was included in a Humble Indie Bundle, meaning I gota nice Linux-native, DRM-free version I could mess around with. It turned outthis was a genre of game I greatly enjoyed, and when it turned out that thesequel was just about to release, I was really looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, when Torchlight II came out, it was both Windows-only andDRM-encumbered. Windows-only is not that much of a problem, since Wine’spretty good these days. DRM was something of a moral issue, but eventually whenRunic made it clear that they were not going to budge I decided I should atleast try it. However, it turned out that the DRM used was also a technicalissue: for whatever reason, it caused Wine to crash at startup. If I obtainedan applied a DRM-crack for the game it’d work pretty well, but becomingdependent on software pirates is probably worse than becoming dependent on DRM.
Anyway, this frustrating state of affairs seems to have been solved by Wine1.7.1, and in particular Wine bug 29448, whose fix landed in that version. With that change, Torchlight II works pretty well out of the box.
However, Wine 1.7.1 is still pretty new and a lot of Linux distros probablydon’t have it yet (if you’re reading this in the Glorious Future whereeverybody has Wine 1.7.1 or later in their distro’s standard packages, you canprobably safely ignore this entire document) so I thought I’d put togethera quick guide for people unfamiliar with PlayOnLinux to get them sorted.
To go through this guide, you’ll need:
PlayOnLinux installed. It might be available in your distro’s package-manager, you might have to download it and run it from a tarball, whatever. Just have it installed and running.
A copy of the Torchlight II installer. Whether it’s the stub-installer you get from clicking “Download the Free Demo” on the Torchlight II home page, or the full “offline installer”, it doesn’t much matter. You just need to have it handy.
Start PlayOnLinux, however you have it installed. When it’s up and running,assuming you haven’t used it before, it’ll start up with an empty list.
From PlayOnLinux’s Tools menu, pick “Manage Wine versions…”.
A new window should open listing the available versions of Wine that can beinstalled. In the list of available versions, pick “1.7.1” (or higher, if it’savailable).
Click the “>” button in the middle, and PlayOnLinux will open a new dialog fordownloading Wine and its various dependencies.
When it’s done, “1.7.1” should be listed under “Installed Wine versions” on theright. Amos 18 license code cracks.
Real converter mac. Close the Wine version manager window, returning to the main PlayOnLinuxwindow. This time, on the right of the window, click “Install a program”. A new“install menu” dialog will open.
Click “Install a non-listed program” in the bottom-left. A “manualinstallation” wizard will appear.
Click “Next”, then select “Install a program in a new virtual drive.”
Click “Next”, then type a name for the new virtual drive - “Torchlight2” isa good choice.
Click “Next”, then tick the box next to “Use another version of Wine”. Ignorethe others.
Click “Next”, then from the list of Wine versions, pick “1.7.1” that weinstalled earlier.
Click “Next”, then select “32 bits windows installation”.
Click “Next”, wait for the virtual drive to be created, then (when iteventually appears) click the Browse button, and select the Torchlight2 installer you downloaded previously.
Click “Next”, and the Torchlight II installation wizard should appear.
I can’t be bothered screenshotting all the pages of the Torchlight IIinstallation wizard, but here’s the options I picked:
Eventually, click “Finish” to exit the Torchlight II installer, and you’llreturn to the PlayOnLinux manual installation wizard, giving you a list ofinstalled programs to make shortcuts for. Select “tl2.runic.launcher.exe” atthe bottom of the list.
Click “Next”, and change the shortcut name to “Torchlight II”.
Click “Next”, and this time select “I don’t want to make another shortcut”.
Click “Next”, and now Torchlight II will be an option in the PlayOnLinux window.
Select it, then click “Run” in the toolbar to launch the Torchlight IIlauncher. It should appear and start downloading whatever updates are needed totake you to the latest version.
From here, everything should be exactly the same as it is in the normal Windowsversion, including activation.
On my machine (Intel HD4000 graphics, Mesa 9.1 drivers), when the “Hardwareskinning” option is enabled (which it is by default) the game draws animatedcharacters (such as the Estherians and a tree on the title-screen) as blankwhite shapes, instead of their proper textures. I’m not sure if this isa driver issue or a Wine issue, but disabling “Hardware skinning” fixes it.
Running GUTS requires .NET 3.5. Running it under Wine gives an error messageabout ‘please install Mono for Windows’; installing Mono 2.8 (the latestversion in PlayOnLinux) doesn’t make it work, and the official .NET installersdon’t seem to work properly under Wine either, so no GUTS for you.

Before letting out all of your bad feelings toward development team, do not forget to go to the official website of your graphics card manufacturer and download the latest drivers. There are often specially prepared optimized drivers for specific game. You can also try to install a past versions of the driver if the problem is not solved by installing the current version. It is important to remember that only the final version of the video card driver must be loaded – try not to use the beta version, since they can have some terrible bugs.
Do not also forget that for good game operation you may need to install the latest version DirectX, which can be found and downloaded from official Microsoft website.
Many of the problems with games launching happen because of improper installation. Check, if there was any error during installation, try deleting the game and run the installer again, but before install don’t forget to disable antivirus – it may often mistakenly delete files during installation process. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with a game should contain only Latin characters and numbers.

Your first solution to this problem install new drivers for a video card. This action can drastically rise game FPS. Also, check the CPU and memory utilization in the Task Manager (opened by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE). If before starting the game you can see that some process consumes too many resources - turn off the program or simply remove this process from Task Manager.
Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First – turn off anti-aliasing and try to lower the setting, responsible for post-processing. Many of them consume a lot of resources and switching them off will greatly enhance the performance, and not greatly affect the quality of the picture.
If Torchlight III often crashes to the desktop, try to reduce quality of the graphics. It is possible that your PC just does not have enough performance and the game may not work correctly. Also, it is worth to check out for updates - most of today's games have the automatic patches installation system on startup if internet connection is available. Check to see whether this option is turned off in the settings and switch it on if necessary.
The most common issue with black screen is a problem with your GPU. Check to see if your video card meets the minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is the result of a lack of CPU performance.
If everything is fine with your hardware and it satisfies the minimum requirements, try to switch to another window (ALT + TAB), and then return to the game screen.
First of all, check that you have enough space on the HDD for installation. Remember that to work properly installer requires the declared volume of space, plus 1-2 GB of additional free space on the system drive. In general, remember this rule – you must always have at least 2 gigabytes of free space on your system drive (usually it’s disk C) for temporary files. Problems with the installation may also be due to the lack of an internet connection or it’s instability. Also, do not forget to stop the antivirus for the time game installation – sometimes it interferes with the correct file copy, or delete files by mistake, mistakenly believing they are viruses.
By analogy with the previous solution, check for free space on HDD - both on where the game is installed, and the system drive. Often your saves are stored in a folder of documents, which is separate from the game itself.
Sometimes the controls in game do not work because of the simultaneous connection of multiple input devices. Try disabling gamepad, or, if for some reason, you have two connected keyboards or mouses, leave only one pair of devices. If your gamepad does not work, remember - the games usually officially support only native Xbox controllers. If your controller is defined in system differently - try using software that emulates the Xbox gamepad (eg, x360ce - step by step manual can be found here).
Check if the sound works in other programs. Then check to see if the sound is turned off in the settings of the game, and whether there is correct audio playback device selected, which is connected your speakers or headset. After this check volumes in system mixer, it can also be turned off there.
If you are using an external audio card - check for new drivers at the manufacturer's website.
